We’ve grown up and decided we didn’t want to be as big as we thought, so welcome to our new weekend-only version of Out and About. Here are my picks:
Friday, Aug. 2
Head down to the Ferry Building for Sundown Cinema’s showing of Barbie from 6–10 p.m. Get there early to find the best seating, grab some eats, and enjoy the preshow entertainment. Reserve here for a chance to win reserved seating, or just show up. Free admission.

Saturday, Aug. 3
It’s hard to believe today is the 22nd Annual Jerry Garcia Day celebrating the icon’s birthday at his eponymous amphitheater in McLaren Park. Follow all that up with the after-party pub crawl, Jerry Night, in the Excelsior District. Free admission.

Take a drive down to Pacifica State Beach for the World Dog Surfing Contest. Yep, you read that right, it’s a thing, a very serious thing for proud pet parents. And it’s a kick. Free admission.

Sat.–Sun., Aug. 3–4
Take in the 50th Annual Nihonmachi Street Fair in Japantown, which showcases the traditions and diversity of Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities, and was designated a legacy business this year for its community contributions. Enjoy entertainment, food, kiddo fun, and the ever-popular Doggie World. Free admission.

The film La La Land holds a special place in lots of hearts. If yours is one of them, and you have bucks to burn, see it on a big screen today with the San Francisco Symphony performing live musical accompaniment. Tickets here.

If you’re the craft fair type, don’t miss the Renegade Craft Fair at Fort Mason, offering the best and finest selection of wares from over 250 curated artists. You can even browse while sipping your favorite libation (for purchase), and pups are welcome. Free admission.

Over at the Presidio Theatre, in their lovely, grassy outdoor courtyard, you’ll find the Bliss Fest, an intimate music festival with food trucks, complimentary beer and wine tasting, arts and crafts, and “blissful vibes.” Tickets from $8.

Enjoy your weekend and be safe!
