Another new day

by John Zipperer
Editor in Chief, The Voice of San Francisco

Welcome to our weekly newsletter from The Voice of San Francisco. We’ve been growing quite a bit lately, so some of you are new. We hope you enjoy it—take a look, kick the tires, click the links, read, learn, maybe laugh a bit.

The Voice launched just last April, and since then, we’ve welcomed thousands of people to our website and as listeners to our podcasts. As a nonprofit, we’re also grateful to the many who have sent a few dollars our way to support our efforts to expand.

You won’t agree with everything you read or hear from us, but we think you’ll like having a voice in the city that offers a new look at San Francisco’s problems and approaches to solving them. And you can let your voice be heard too—drop us a note with reactions, tips, and more.

Glad you could join us.

Late Saturday afternoon over Labor Day weekend, 23-year-old San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, a first-round pick in the latest NFL draft, was shot in the chest during a robbery attempt in San Francisco’s Union Square. A 17-year-old boy tried to steal Pearsall’s Rolex watch, and in the ensuing scuffle Pearsall was shot along with his teen attacker, who was wounded with his own handgun before police quickly arrived and arrested him.

Our September summer is host to more outdoor events than I could list, so here are my picks for the weekend, including some events next week highlighting some important upcoming elections.

Friday, Sept. 6

The Fort Mason Art Walk is the perfect opportunity to explore all the galleries you probably didn’t even know were there, like the American Indian Cultural District, Museo Italo Americano, SF Camerawork, San Francisco Children’s Art Center, Haines Gallery, and others. Enjoy pop-up artist and curator talks, workshops, a live performance, giveaways, and more, including great dining options. 5–8 p.m. Free, register here (which will get you a free drink ticket.)

Saturday, Sept. 7

Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema has a great film festival from neighborhood film crawls to Under the Stars at Precita Park. Tonight enjoy a variety of shorts by local filmmakers featuring documentaries, music animation, drama, and more, including four award-winning films. 6–9:30 p.m. Free, register here

Sunday, Sept. 8

As if the Presidio Tunnel Tops aren’t already the best, you can enjoy that incredible place even more at the World Arts West Dance Festival, where 13 groups will share their diverse cultural heritage through music, dance, and dress. 1 p.m. Free admission, register here.

See more weekend events online.
