For the 25th year, Muni will offer its bus and train services for free starting at 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve until 5 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is reminding passengers to not tag their Clipper cards and to not activate MuniMobile passes during the free hours of Muni service. Passengers who tag will be charged.

“A quarter-century of free rides on Muni for New Year’s Eve is an incredible milestone to celebrate 2025,” said SFMTA Director of Transit Julie Kirschbaum, in a press release. “Our Muni operators are the best drivers in town and make it so much easier to get you to your night out. It’s the safest way to get around San Francisco for New Year’s celebrations.”

Transit officials said they will provide additional Muni Metro service, including those heading to the Embarcadero to watch the city-sponsored fireworks. From 8 p.m. to 2:15 a.m., the SFMTA will provide additional subway service.

Passengers can expect to see S Shuttle trains running between West Portal and Fourth and King stations. Shuttle trains will also run along the Central Subway between Chinatown-Rose Pak and Third and Mariposa stations. The last shuttle trains will start at 2 a.m. from each end of the line, the SFMTA said.

Caltrain, SamTrans, and AC Transit will also be offering free transit service from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning. Caltrain will offer additional train service from San Francisco to San Jose at 1 a.m., 1:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m.

BART will also provide extended weekday service past midnight at 1 a.m. for those returning from fireworks shows and parties. Passengers taking BART will need to pay for fares.
