Picture a 10th grader sitting in her math class. Her phone is “hidden” in her hoodie pouch, but she surreptitiously checks notifications every few minutes, knowing that I have too many students and too much teaching to do to pester her. She was late three out of four classes this week, missing the first 10 minutes of instruction each time. Last night she had plenty of time to do her modest homework assignment, but she procrastinated until eleven, at which point she was too tired to think straight. She got through it — sort of — and turned it in.
This child is not a bad student. She is not lazy. She just has no idea that she has violated four of the six distinct laws of cognitive science.
She has no idea those laws exist. And because no one has ever taught her, she has no basis for understanding why the quiz on Friday felt like crashing into a brick wall rather than walking through a door.
This is not strictly her fault. It is a failure of the system that educated her — a system that teaches the content of 13 years of school without ever ensuring that students understand the basics of how learning actually happens and what their responsibilities are for cooperating with it.
Cognitive science provides an invisible map of the conditions under which human brains actually learn. These laws operate whether or not someone acknowledges them. Most students go through 13 years of school without ever being explicitly taught that these laws even exist. That is its own form of systemic failure — distinct from but related to the one I diagnosed in an earlier column.
My second day of school is always devoted to making these laws explicit — not as abstract science but as practical tools students can use to diagnose their own learning problems in real time. Students work together through a graphic organizer that structures and anchors the six laws. As part of the lesson, they practice diagnosing fictional students whose learning has broken down at specific points — a student scrolling social media through a lesson, a student who crammed the night before instead of spacing practice over time, a student who was late every day and missed the first 15 minutes of instruction. Diagnosing someone else’s violations is emotionally safer than diagnosing your own but it builds exactly the same skills.
By the end of the first week, a brief quiz asks students to retrieve what they learned. They trade papers and grade each other’s work. There are five versions of the quiz, so grading a classmate’s quiz also acts as a second retrieval practice event for every student embedded in what looks like a routine classroom task. The points are “free” in a specific sense: every student receives all the answers in advance. There is no excuse not to succeed. But it is still a real quiz with real accountability — students who don’t engage with the material can still lose points. The design is deliberate. It removes every obstacle except the one that matters: whether the student did the work of actually learning and practicing what they were given.
Teaching children to cooperate with the laws of reality is not the same as lowering our expectations. It is setting them up to meet them.
The quiz design forces comprehensive mastery: each of the five versions asks students to generate an original example of a fictional student violating a different law. The only reliable way to prepare is to know all six laws well enough to produce a violation example for any of them on demand. And grading a classmate’s version — which covers a different law than the one you were tested on — requires evaluating whether someone else’s imagined example constitutes a genuine violation. In the span of one week, every student has encoded the laws, applied them generatively, and judged someone else’s application.
That’s not a quiz. That’s a learning cycle.
Here are the six basic laws of the learning cycle under cognitive science. These are the conditions under which human minds actually learn. They’re nonnegotiable, and they’re not a matter of anybody’s personal teaching philosophy.
1. Attendance: You miss 100 percent of the learning you don’t show up for or are late for.
2. Attention: Attention is the all-or-nothing gateway to learning. If your attention is split, you won’t learn anything.
3. Working memory: The mind’s workspace is narrow and delicate. Procrastination and split attention devastate it.
4. Sense-Making: If you don’t stay with a new idea until it clicks for you, it will never become a tool you can use. You are responsible for your own personal sense-making.
5. Long-Term Memory: Remembering new ideas and skills does not happen magically. You have to commit to mindful and regular practice of retrieving them.
6. Four key failure points in the learning cycle: There are four main diagnostic failure points in the learning process:
– You weren’t present to learn (Attendance)
– You indulged in distraction (Attention and Sense-Making)
– You overloaded your working memory by procrastinating (Working Memory and Sense-Making)
– You didn’t do your daily retrieval practice and deliberately self-assess your status with it (Long-Term Memory and Sense-Making)
Understood through the lens of cognitive science, actions that look like noncompliance under a behavioral framework — phone-sneaking, tardiness, procrastination — are actually undiagnosed violations of the learning laws the student was never taught. A student who doesn’t know these laws can’t see the direct causal link between their behavioral choices and their own learning outcomes or grasp how much energy they’re wasting working against their own cognition instead of with it.
Understanding this framework opens the door to a new kind of conversation you can have with your child when they hit a wall. You are not asking them to justify themselves. You are helping them see something that has been invisible to them over their many years of schooling. And if their teacher has made these laws explicit, your child already has the framework. You’re just helping them use it.
Here are four diagnostic questions you can use to help your teenager make these connections visible:
1. Were you present to learn?
2. Were you distracted?
3. Did you procrastinate?
4. Did you practice working with the new idea every day and noticing your status?
Your job here is collaborative, not prosecutorial. You are helping your child develop the habit of self-reflection.
Teaching children to cooperate with the laws of reality is not the same as lowering our expectations. It is setting them up to meet them.
