The Sunset turned out in force as neighbors, civic advocates, and a contingent from the Asian American community gathered to watch City College Trustee Alan Wong take the oath as District 4’s newest Supervisor.

Wong’s family immigrated from Hong Kong; he grew up in the Sunset and cut his teeth in civic life as a student council kid at Lincoln High. Perhaps the most endearing backdrop to his swearing-in was the sight of Lincoln High students peering down from three stories of windows, watching one of their own take the oath.

After graduating early from UC San Diego and sharpening his public affairs skills at the University of San Francisco, Wong made it clear that public service wasn’t just a career choice; “it was a calling.”

Supervisor Wong wasted no time sketching out his priorities, which include:

  • Public safety – a fully staffed SFPD
  • Trim red tape for small businesses
  • Dedicate time and resources to D4 working families and their needs
  • Add more D4 housing needs to meet community demand
  • Make city services more accessible

Wong was adamant regarding the Great Highway: “The status quo is unacceptable.” As a 20-year Sunset resident and National Guard officer, he stressed that he’s never had a problem with sharing the road. Whether it’s joggers, commuters, or parents hustling kids to school, Wong sees the highway as a space that should work for everyone.
