Happy Memorial Day weekend! It’s now the unofficial beginning of summer, and here are some events to kick it off and get you out and about.

Friday, May 24

This is the last weekend for the immersive theater experience, The Fillmore Eclipse, set in the Fillmore jazz scene of the 1950s during urban renewal. The Eclipse is modeled after the Fillmore jazz club Bop City where jazz greats would often drop in unannounced. Enjoy cocktails at the bar, the house band, and follow the characters as they offer their perspectives for the “new city.” All performances have sold out, so act fast. Tickets $50.

This is the 46th annual Carnaval Festival and Parade over 17 Mission District blocks, with five main stages of music, 50 performing artists (but I’d expect more), and 400 vendors. It promises a hub of multicultural entertainment and food spanning all ethnic and social backgrounds for all ages, and has drawn over 400,000 every year. So plan accordingly and have fun. Free admission.

The last weekend of every month (except for January) is always Treasure Island’s “curated festival,” TreasureFest, featuring over 300 designers, crafters, artists, and vintage curators; over 40 food vendors; interactive art and games; live music; libations, and probably more. This weekend is their 13th anniversary, so there will be even more festivities. The view is fabulous, it’s dog friendly, and you can get there by ferry. Tickets $5–$20. You’re already over there, so be sure to check out the recently opened Panorama Park on Yerba Buena Island for more views and the 69-foot Point of Infinity sculpture by Hiroshi Sugimoto. Free admission. I’ve just decided what I’m doing this weekend!

Your pup is also welcome at the one-day West Coast Craft Late Spring Outdoor Market at Fort Mason, where you can browse the wares from over 100 artists, designers, and crafters from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free admission.

Even if the sun is shining everywhere else, it may not be at the Outer Sunset Farmers Market & Mercantile, but the farmers, musicians, vendors, local organizations, and more will still be there every Sunday on 37th Avenue from Ortega to Quintara streets from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., so you should be, too. Free admission.

Got kids? Either way, the 72 Harley Farms Goat Dairy kids born in March are pretty dang cute for big and little people alike. It’s a perfect Sunday drive down to Pescadero to the working farm with lots of other animals, too, and picnic areas, a farm shop, and more, like tours if you want to get up close and personal with the furry ones. Free picnicking and shopping; tours $55.

The Veterans Administration will host a commemoration ceremony from 10:30–11:30 a.m. at the San Francisco National Cemetery in the Presidio, and the Presidio Chapel will present a meditative organ concert at 12:15 p.m.

Celebrate the last day of your long weekend with a bonfire at Ocean Beach. Firepits are available on a first-come basis, but before you go read the government’s rules and regulations (Ocean Beach is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area). And don’t forget to bundle up.
