It’s very debatable
by John Zipperer
Publisher, The Voice of San Francisco
It’s always the money, isn’t it? Whether candidates are claiming to represent the downtrodden or are so rich they profess to be beyond the temptation of money, the dollar and its use to get elected, buy favors, smear opponents, enrich oneself seems to crop up in almost every election on every level of government.
We’re still absorbing the news about Sheryl Davis’ sudden exit from the mayor’s Dream Keeper Initiative. The mayor is saying Mark Farrell asked for special permit help (Farrell denies it happened). Daniel Lurie tries to float above it all as Mr. Clean. Who’s right? That’s for you to decide this fall. Tonight, KQED is hosting the latest mayoral debate, so you’ll get your chance to see it all play out on your TV screen.
In news closer to home this week, I want to turn over the megaphone to The Voice’s new editor in chief, Mike Ege, whose name you are no doubt familiar with from many Voice articles in the past five months. Mike?
A message from our new editor in chief
by Mike Ege
Editor in Chief, The Voice of San Francisco
I‘m thrilled to introduce myself to readers of The Voice of San Francisco as its new editor in chief. I’ve contributed to The Voice since this past April, having come on board after reporting for the San Francisco Standard for two years. Previously, I covered policy and politics at the Bay City Beacon, a community news outlet active in the late 2010s. Like many San Franciscans, I’ve been a person of many hats in the 30-plus years I’ve lived here as a grownup. I’ve been following San Francisco politics and policy for over 25 of those years.
At The Voice, we are committed to giving you, our readers, an unbiased and informative look at what’s going on in the City by the Bay, from City Hall to our many diverse neighborhoods, through the multiple ways our online format allows. I’m committed to bringing you even more in that direction. I’m excited to continue working with our CEO, Susan Reynolds; our publisher, John Zipperer; and our talented and experienced contributors to bring you truly informed insight into our town’s goings-on without strings attached.
As we enter the home stretch of this watershed election season, we must remember that the story of San Francisco’s recovery is far from over. Regardless of the outcome of this election, the coming years will be a crucial process of reinvestment in our city. Public accountability is key to ensuring its success and its benefit to everyone. That is our Job One.
However, I can only achieve these goals with you, our readers. If you have story ideas or feedback, please share it with me at mike.ege@thevoicesf.org. It’s absolutely invaluable.

On Dec. 17, 2014, the late Mayor Ed Lee and Lennar Urban developers broke ground on Pacific Pointe at the Shipyard, 60 permanently affordable family homes in Bayview-Hunters Point shipyard. “I am excited to see the wonderful opportunities that have been available in our community finally come to fruition. One hundred percent affordable housing demonstrates that YCD is serious about keeping our community whole,” beamed Shamann Walton, then executive director of Young Community Developers (YCD). […]

What to do this weekend
By Lynette Majer
Managing Editor, The Voice of San Francisco

The fog horn is a-blowin’ but the days are still warmish (depending on where you are or what corner you’ve turned), and there are always outdoor events to enjoy as we head into fall. And it’s election season, so there’s some of those things, too. Here are my picks for the week and beyond.
Friday, Sept. 20
As the oldest (1893) Bavarian-style beer hall in the West, Schroeder’s Octoberfest Block Party is legendary. Don your dirndls and lederhosen and enjoy beer-hall games, German food and beer (for purchase), live music, and lots of people having fun, including all those Salesforce people. 2–10 p.m. Free admission.
Whether your pour is whisky or whiskey, Whiskies of the World is sure to be a great Friday happy hour with tastings of over 150 whiskies and light gourmet bites. Tickets from $125.
Saturday, Sept. 21
Cheese lovers will want to check out the Annual San Francisco Cheese Festival, a fundraiser for Western artisan cheesemakers. According to in-the-know Tablehopper, some new varieties on taste are Pear, Wine, and Rosemary Goat Cheese (Laura Chenel); Prospector Triple Crème Brie with Black Truffle (Marin French Cheese Co.); and Fennel Blue and Truffle Brie (Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Co.) Yum. Oh, and paired with preserves, chocolates, charcuterie, local wine and beer, live music, and bay views from the Ferry Building. 6–9 p.m. Tickets $98
