FOMO no mo

By John Zipperer
Editor in Chief, The Voice of San Francisco

You might or might not have gotten your chance to see the northern lights during its larger-than-normal display this past weekend. If you did see it, did you leave the city to get away from the urban background lighting? Did cloudy weather prevent you from enjoying this rare vision of the aurora borealis? In similar cosmic news, I have friends who trekked across multiple states recently to get themselves in the path of the recent eclipse, only to be disappointed by cloudy weather.

The universe can do that—it can cause fear of missing out (FOMO). This newsletter is here to help ensure that you don’t miss out on any of the interesting offerings our writers, editors, artists, and producers have created for you.

One of those things is something I alluded to in the first newsletter: Voice daily podcast host John Rothmann represented the Voice when he co-moderated a District 11 supervisor candidates forum. Scroll down the newsletter to see more and watch the video.

And, in the interests of calming your FOMO, let me give you a bit of a heads-up about things to expect this week from the Voice. Tomorrow you can see Susan Dyer Reynolds’ third installment of her “NIMBY tyrant of Telegraph Hill” series. If you think this city has too many candidate debates and forums, then Nomi Kane’s next political cartoon will have a warning about insufficiently informed voters (you’ll see what I mean); meanwhile, her previous cartoon is below. And on our weekly podcast, Melissa Caen and I speak with pollster Jonathan Brown about the San Francisco mayoral race, learning to love crosstabs, and Estes Kefauver (I kid you not). And of course every day you can get your John Rothmann fix with his daily Voice podcasts.

But FOMO no mo(re), because there is more. Managing Editor Lynette Majer will be sharing her weekend not-to-be-missed list, I’ll be taking a look at the state of S.F. real estate, critic Michael Snyder has a look at two recent film noir presentations, and, as usual, there will be even more than all of that.

But first, the news . . .

Reactions

Reader David Perry (who, among many other accomplishments, is author of the book Upon This Rock), took issue with John Rothmann’s May 3 podcast “Closing the Great Highway makes no sense!” Writes Perry: “[T]he Great Highway is a by-pass for those from Marin to get to the Peninsula and vise-a-versa, it doesn’t benefit the Sunset nor Parkside neighborhoods in San Francisco that it passes through at all. How about making a throughway bypass in John Rothmann’s neighborhood so he can breath in all the exhaust from vehicles driven by people that could care less about his neighborhood. Looking forward to the closure, regardless of whatever the stated reasons may be. Finally, John, what happened to your much ballyhooed run for SF Mayor?”

And over on social media site X, Todd Davis writes (tongue in cheek, we’re sure): “Whatever you do don’t read the VoSF, they talk about things like government waste. We only spend $60,000 per homeless person per year, how would there be any room for waste in that number?”
