Lobalita — a modern Mexican cantina from the team behind Harper and Rye, Bar Darling, Peacekeeper, Bar April Jean, Padrecito, and Mamacita — opened last Tuesday at 2231 Chestnut Street in the Marina District in the former space of the Tipsy Pig, which was also part of the group’s portfolio.

Owners Nate Valentine, Stryker Scales, and Jamal Blake-Williams welcomed their first customers March 17, 2026, after 16 months of planning and nine months of construction.

The name Lobalita — derived from the Latin word for “she-wolf” — symbolizes feminine strength, loyalty, and community. It also reflects the partners’ personal story: Valentine, Scales and Blake-Williams grew up together, pursued independent paths and later reunited to become some of San Francisco’s most successful bar and restaurant owners.

The culinary program is led by chef Deiber Tzab, formerly of Mamacita and Padrecito. It features elevated yet approachable Mexican dishes designed for sharing. Classics include chips and guacamole ($12) and enchiladas ($19–$23), but many items offer a unique twist: Taquitos feature ground chicken in a peanut-coconut milk mole ($14), while the birria ($17) comes topped with smoked gouda. Communal dining is encouraged.

The beverage program shines at the long, beautiful bar that stretches from the front of the restaurant to the midpoint. Thirsty drinkers on a budget will appreciate the signature cocktails, all priced at $14. Choices include the Carajillo, made with Licor 43, house cold-brew espresso, and espresso-cinnamon salt dust; and the El Sol Rojo, made with tequila, chamoy-blood orange syrup, and lime. The wine list highlights private-label Chilean house orange, and white, rose, sparkling, champagne, and red wines from the U.S and Europe. Beers include a solid selection of lagers and IPAs at approachable prices: a can of Tecate is $4, and a draft pint of Fairfax Brewing Company pilsner is $8.

The subtly refreshed interior feels layered, warm, and lived-in, with rustic wood floors, bench seating, and amber ceiling lights creating a cozy, homey atmosphere. The design extends to a beautifully appointed back patio that blurs indoor and outdoor spaces, with seating ranging from intimate banquettes to high-top bar areas.

Valentine said the team aimed to reinvigorate the space with a concept close to their hearts.

“We wanted to bring new life into this beautiful space,” he said. “We wanted to try something new. Mexican food has been near and dear to our hearts. Our first restaurant was Mamacita. Closing it was hard for us, so we wanted to bring something similar back to the street.”

Acknowledging the success of the trio’s nearby Bar Darling — a massive draw for young singles — Valentine expressed a desire for a diverse clientele across social, racial, and economic lines.

“We hope to have families early, then dates and groups later, and for it to be an inclusive place for everybody,” Valentine said.

On the unusually hot opening afternoon, locals streamed in, many expressing excitement with comments like “I’m so glad you’re finally open!” Valentine shook hands and welcomed them all in.

Lobalita opens at 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, with kitchen service from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and the bar stays open late. It is currently walk-in only with open seating; reservations for larger parties will be added later.
