It’s impossible not to feel heartache about the devastation the fires have caused in the Los Angeles area. We’ve seen those apocalyptic orange skies here in the city, smelled that smoke, and some have seen flying embers and ash rain from the Sonoma fires. The L.A. fires have destroyed an area larger than San Francisco — think about that — if our entire city had burned to the ground, along with Daly City and Colma.
Fire has no mercy. But you do, so here’s how you can help our state.
Manny’s is accepting donations at the rear of its building at 3092 16th Street from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Thursday, Jan. 16, and 8 a.m. to noon Friday, Jan. 17 when the items will be transported to Los Angeles.
Here’s what is needed: non-perishable food (rice, pasta, canned food); storage products (strong tape, bins, moving supplies); toys (new and used, crafts, Legos, and the like); hygiene products (soap, shampoo, lotions, toiletries); kids’ clothes (all genders, like new only); N95/KN95 masks; baby products (formula, baby washes, baby food, diapers); feminine hygiene products; new undergarments (all genders); and shelter needs (sleeping bags, tents, blankets).
Manny has also shared this airtable clothing registry where you can enter your clothing size and get connected to someone with your size who needs clothes. And if you’d like to join some on-site volunteering, complete this form about your availability and what you’d be interested in doing.
Update 01/16: Thanks to overwhelming community support, Manny’s has suspended donations. When I dropped off mine late this afternoon, the entire meeting room was crammed with everything on their list. They are still looking for drivers however, so if you’d like to take a road trip Friday, Jan. 17 (noon departure) to deliver the goods, let him know: manny@welcometomannys.com
