As Bay Area revelers get ready to ring in 2026, many transit agencies will offer free rides to get to events and back home, including free Muni rides in San Francisco, just in case driving is not an option.

Starting at 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve to 5 a.m. the following morning, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), as planned, will offer free Muni rides on all its routes and lines. Transportation officials are reminding passengers not to tag the fare readers with Clipper or activate a MuniMobile ticket during the hours when rides are free.

Bay Area transit riders can also rely on SamTrans, AC Transit, and VTA to provide free rides on New Year’s Eve.

The SFMTA said on its website that it plans to provide S-Shuttle trains from West Portal station to Fourth and King streets until 2 a.m., while additional shuttle train service will run between the Chinatown/Rose Pak station and Third and Mariposa streets.

Caltrain is providing free rides starting at 8 p.m. until its special train service ends. The transit system will have three southbound trains departing San Francisco at 1 a.m., 1:30 a.m., and 2 a.m.

While BART won’t be free on New Year’s Eve, they will provide an extended 1 a.m. service.
