Sometimes the truth really does lie in the middle; other times you have to dig a little deeper

The Chronicle reads The Voice; Young Community Developers should read The Voice; and Bilal Mahmood probably doesn’t want to read The Voice.

by Mike Ege

For years I’ve been saying the feds should look into Young Community Developers (YCD), a favorite nonprofit of Harlan Kelly and Juliet Ellis and their pay-to-play community benefits scheme at the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission with deep ties to former executive directors Shamann Walton and his mentor, former executive director Dwayne Jones. I wrote in July 2020, “Not only was Dwayne Jones the executive director from […]

Quote of the week

“The ambition and scope of her career were, alas, quite incompatible in the late 19th century with marriage and childbearing, even for a woman of her elevated social class.”

Whether its dance events or more outdoor festivals to the wildly popular Hallyu! The Korean Way exhibition making its way across the country and landing at the Asian Art Museum, plus a few civic events, there’s plenty to do to get you out and about in the coming days. Here are my picks.

Friday, Sept.27

Organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, Hallyu! The Korean Way, opening today at the Asian Art Museum, explores how South Korea reinvented itself as a 21st-century pop culture phenomenon with music, film, and TV to fashion and beauty. The opening celebration includes bites, craft cocktails, K-pop tunes, and D.J. Kero One and nail artist Sojin Oh. Tickets: $30.

The Sunset Night Market has doubled in size from last year, and now spans seven blocks. Find over 100 art and retail vendors and over 50 food vendors with an emphasis on Asian street food, so this is definitely the place for your Friday night dinner and more, like live music, kiddo fun, and a durian-eating contest hosted by Supervisor Engardio. 5–10 p.m., Irving Street (between 19th and 26th avenues), Free admission.

Saturday, Sept. 28

The Richmond district’s annual Autumn Moon Festival offers “culture, community, and celebration” along with lion dancing, a mooncake cutting ceremony, drum dragon kung fu, a dragon costume contest, Chinese folk dancing, and more, including local artists and specialty food vendors. 11 a.m.–3 p.m., Clement Street (between Seventh and 11th avenues). Free admission.

The Yerba Buena Gardens Festival will present its third annual YBG Dance Day, which will offer a variety of hour-long outdoor classes across several genres, including salsa, rhythm and motion, contemporary, dancehall, and more. Free admission.

Tuesday, Oct. 1

I’m betting tonight’s vice presidential debate between Tim Walz and JD Vance will be just as entertaining as the presidential debate last month, if not more. Here are some watch parties around town: The Academy SF: cohosted by the Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club, 5–8 p.m. Tickets: $15 and change; The Chapel: hosted by Manny’s, (standing room with limited seating), 5–7:30 p.m., Tickets: $15 and change; and The Commonwealth Club: Follow up with legal analyst Melissa Caen. 5:30–7:30 p.m. Tickets: $15
